Synopsis of Play

April’s Fools is a collection of stories told by a cast of eccentric individuals living in Portland, Maine in the late 1990’s. April’s Fools finds its way from the mundane to the fantastic through myth, allegory and personal tales. The stories take place in the mind of Fred Andrews, a quiet older man, who believes we can change the world by changing the stories we tell ourselves.

April’s Fools takes its name from the fact that, after a long winter, every speck of life that comes out of the earth seems magical. For those of us who live in northern climates, living in darkness and cold for months can leave one feeling quite empty and drained of life. With the arrival of spring, we are stunned by the fantastic array of life that comes bursting out of the ground all around us. Beautiful, fragile, fragrant life suddenly appears in as many colors and forms as can be imagined. Life bursts forth in our own selves as well. Our hearts open. Our eyes open. We are witness to magic everywhere. Is life magical? Is there wonder here? Or are we simply April's fools?

Character Descriptions

The Ensemble
April’s Fools can be performed with 6-8 actors who make up the ensemble. However, other actors can take roles such as The Narrator, The Arrogant Man, Ranger Teri, etc. One benefit to a larger cast is the number of actors available for the three myth type stories: The Spinners, The Young Man Who Found The End of The Earth, and How Day Sky and Night Sky Came to Share The Heavens.

Fred- 50’s or older. A quiet man. A thinker and storyteller. He often finds himself standing in the middle of a room, just standing there, caught up in memories. It bothers him. April’s Fools is a series of stories, dreams, and memories going through Fred’s head. He recently found himself standing out on the street, just standing there. What’s next? Talking to himself on the street out loud? This bothers Fred. He is in love with Jonathan.

Merle- an odd yet charismatic guy. A street person, he’s been sleeping in dumpsters for some time. He’s a bit rough around the edges, yet he has a smile on his face and a light in his eyes that looks like he’s in on the secret of the universe. He’s a bit wild eyed, which is disconcerting at first, but he’s totally likeable. He’s obsessed with getting people to think.

Kris & Kristy- Late teens, early twenties. Eclectic thrift store look. She’s innocent, yet street smart. Since Kristy is Kris’s memory of herself, we get the opportunity to see more than one aspect of her personality. She is a complex girl.

Jonathan- a twenties something young man heading out into the world without fear. He is full of energy, vitality, and wonder. Perhaps a bit naïve, Jonathan is moved mostly by passion. He follows his heart. He sees the big picture. He does not trust authority figures. He is in love with Fred.

Skye/Emily- A woman in her 30’s or older. She is from North Carolina, and might still have a trace of a southern accent. It’s questionable whether Skye is a street person or an eccentric older woman, possibly well off, educated and socially connected. Emily is her younger self.

Scientists- (S-1, S-2, S-3); People- (P-1, P-2 . . . P-5); Narrator, Arrogant Man, Young Girl, Young Man, Seer, Baker, Tailor, etc. These roles are played by the ensemble.Three%20Tales.htmlThree%20Tales.htmlThree%20Tales.htmlThree%20Tales.htmlhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkZHNhjDYDkshapeimage_7_link_0shapeimage_7_link_1shapeimage_7_link_2shapeimage_7_link_3shapeimage_7_link_4
